Colonel Mackenzie's troops are ordered to prevent renegades from filtering across the border into Mexico and, as a result, Dubois's supply wagons are being attacked in areas that they formerly patrolled. Mackenzie suspects that the wagons are carrying rifles intended to arm a counterrevolutionary force to retake Mexico by France and he sets a trap hoping to capture the guns and disperse the nascent military force before they can organize.
